"Flowers for the oppressed: The lotus flower, a symbol of Buddhism, can only grow in muddy waters. The roots extend deep into the mud and muck, but the beautiful blossom pushes toward the sun. The lotus flower, transported to a pool of clean water, will die. It is only from the mud that the flower may rise.
